Improving Intrapersonal Communication

Effective intrapeersonal communication depends on the sender’s ability to get the message across the reciever as an active listener.

Getting Your Message Across

• Emphathize, a person’s ability to understand and be sensitive to feelings, thoughts, and situation of others. Involves putting the sender in the recievers shoes.

• Repeat the message. Rephrase key point a couple of times.

• Use timing effectively. The reciever are prone to distractions, therefore messages must be effectively timed in order to get the full message across.

• Be descriptive. Focus on the problem not the person, if you have a negative information to convey. People stops listening when the information attacks their self-esteem.

Active Listening

“Nature gave people two ears but only one tounge, which is a gentle hint htat they should listen more than they talk”. Listening, is a process of actively sensing the senders signals, evaluating them accurately and responding appropiately. There are three components.

• Sensing is the process of recieving signals from the sender and paying attention to them.

• Evaluationg includes understanding the meaning of the message, evalutaiong it and remembering it.

• Resoinding, is feedback to the sender, thereby motivating and directing the speakers communication.

Chapter 10

Influencing Others

Influence, refers to any behaviour that attempts to alter someone’s attitudes or behaviour.

Types of influence Tactics

• Silent Authority. When someone complies a request because of the requesters legitimate power as well as the target person’s role expectations. This is the most common form of influence in high power distance culture.

• Assertiveness. In contrast to silent authority, this influence might be called as silent authority, because it actively applies legitimate and coercive power to influence others. For ex. Persitently reminding the targets obligations, frequently checking the...
