Leadership has been described as “a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support the others in the accomplishment of a common task". ( Chemers M. (1997) )

“Management is a social process entailing responsibility for the effective and economical planning and regulation of the operations of an enterprise, in fulfilment of a given purpose or task, such responsibility involving: (a) judgment and decision in determining plans and in using data to control performance, and progress against plans; and (b) the guidance, integration, motivation and supervision of the personnel composing the enterprise and carrying out its operations”. (E.F.L. Brech, 1975)

The relationship between leadership and management is linking, because leadership is crucial part of management. A good amount of attention to leadership behaviour can create great conditions for workers to grow and better themselves in. Therefore management is more of a network of communion that brings segments of an organization together. Moreover, a manager is the coordinator that makes sure information is distributed to an array of employees within the organization.

Here are some differences between the two:

❖ Managers have authority from a higher status in which they act upon while leaders follow their gut feelings of ideas.

❖ Management is structured in a sense that is thorough, it has rules, and it is logical and literal. Leadership is more of an art form.

❖ Leaders are focused more on verbal communication while managers do written publications.

❖ The manager mimics; the leader derives.

❖ The manager sees the sky as the limit and a leader does not.
