Today we, as the affirmative team, will argue that iPads are a useful educational tool.

We define the term ‘iPad’ as a touch screen tablet designed by the IT company, Apple. ‘Useful’ means a helpful aid to support teachers. For the purposes of this debate we define ‘educational’ as schooling from Kindergarten to Year 12 and the term ‘tool’ as a unique way classroom learning can be enhanced.

We justify our definitions by stating that they allow for a fair and reasonable debate.

Therefore the affirmative team define today’s topic as iPad’s provide unique opportunities to enhance and improve the learning of students from Kindergarten to Year 12.

As first speaker, I will firstly argue that the iPad is the most versatile technology ever used in the classroom because it is a one-stop shop for learning tools like calculators, video cameras, apps, word processing and textbooks. I will then outline its benefits as an extremely portable learning tool

Our second speaker will argue that the iPad makes learning more fun and engaging for students. She will talk about the role iPads play in giving students hands on IT skills to compete in the real world.

Our third speaker will rebut and sum up our team case.

We believe that these arguments support our team view that the use of iPads in the classroom is essential to ensure students have the skills to survive in the 21st century.

The iPad is the most versatile digital device ever made. According to Apple there are already 8 million iPads being used in schools worldwide. They can be used as a camera, calculator, musical instrument, recording studio or even a library.

For example, we all know what it’s like to use a paper textbook but with an iPad, students can download multi touch textbooks with 3D graphics, interactive images and word glossaries with just one finger tap. They can even build a library of books for each subject and get the latest updates for much less than paper versions.
