Many of you may not know, but a bridesmaid wasn’t always a bridesmaid as we understand today.

The idea of the bridesmaid did not originate from the thought that the bride needed her best friends to attend to her on the most important day in her life. But for a whole different reason…

Fi run duppy!

History tells us that women were dressed in gowns similar to the bride to ward off bad luck, evil spirits and suitors who may have wanted to kidnap or hurt the bride. And, with so many women dressed in white, those who meant her harm certainly would not know who the real bride was.

I have told you this story to illustrate that the role of the bridesmaid has always been a selfless action. It’s one of sacrifice.

Ladies, Francine chose every one of you to share this day with her because each of you display the characteristics and virtues anyone would wish to have in a friend.

With you around one always has money to spare. You certainly know how to spend on a tight budget and still get the best. But that’s not the only reason Francine chose you. Since meeting and working with you at The Gleaner, you have been nothing short of a true friend to her. And, you certainly know how to have fun… even when finances seem short.
