What is Ethics?

Webster's Dictionary defines ethics as: the discipline dealing with what is good and bad, and with moral duty and obligation; further, a set of moral principles or values; a theory or system of moral values; the principles of conduct governing an individual or a group. The important question here is, what does the word “Ethics” mean to you? From the time you were a child, just learning from your family about living, you have often been told not to do something because it was wrong, or to do something because it was the right thing to do.  In this manner you have been learning about “Ethics” without much thought about a formal definition.

Why we need Ethics?

Ethics is a requirement for human life. It is our means of deciding a course of action. Without it, our actions would be random and aimless. There would be no way to work towards a goal because there would be no way to pick between a limitless numbers of goals. Even with an ethical standard, we may be unable to pursue our goals with the possibility of success. To the degree which a rational ethical standard is taken, we are able to correctly organize our goals and actions to accomplish our most important values. Any flaw in our ethics will reduce our ability to be successful in our endeavours. The role of ethics in our lives is very important because it is the basic beliefs and standards that make everything run smoothly. Ethics are involved in all organizations and institutions around us whether it is political, medical, lawful, religious, or social. Ethics are what give us comfort knowing that we live in a country where we are able to choose. Because we believe our doctors are ethical, we feel certain we can trust their diagnoses.
