Family and Marriage
1. What factors bind marriages and families together? How have these factors changed, and how has the divorce rate been affected
There are many factors that bind families together such as financial dependence, a person’s social status and the type of moral and physiological support one person depends on another for. The divorce rate has risen because emphasis is being placed on the needs of an individual instead of the needs of both parties within the relationship.
2. How is “his” divorce different from “her” divorce? How are these differences related to society’s gender expectations? In your observation, are the descriptions given in this chapter accurate assessments of divorce outcomes for men and women today?
His and her divorce are very similar emotionally but different in terms of the roles they have played though out the relationship. Her divorce will include taking on a greater financial burden while being a fulltime single parent. His divorce is coming to means that somebody else could one day fulfill his role as a father and bread winner to those he loves. I think these statement are very accurate, it’s always the mystery of what the next person has done better than you that fuels us.
3. Discuss some structural differences between step-families and first-marriage families with children.
The structural differences between step families and first family marriages vary in the degree of severity. Whether it’s a child not having a strong enough relationship with their step parent to go for them for comfort or support. Or it is something as a step parents introducing themselves as a authoritive figure to the children of the relationship. These differences can drag down a step-families relationship if not handled correctly.
