Decision-Making Process

There was a time in my life when I was faced with the choice to relocate my family three thousand miles away from the home they and I grew up in. My husband’s grandmother was very ill and could no longer care for his 12 year old niece that she had custody of. The first step that I took in my decision-making process was to consider all of the option that where available to us. This included having the grandmother and niece move out to Las Vegas, Nevada with us, have another family member care for the niece and grandmother, or move our family to Pennsylvania to take of the grandmother and niece ourselves. After identifying the problem and coming up with possible solutions, my next step was to carefully weigh the pros and cons of each of my options. This was done by writing out each option, listing the pros and cons, and solutions to problems that arose with each option. This helped me to eliminate option that would not work. For example I was able to eliminate the option of the grandmother and niece moving to Las Vegas with us because she could not travel. The last step in my decision-making process was to decide on a solution, develop a plan of execution and implement it.

In reviewing the six steps of the decision-making process in chapter three of Management 9e I think that the decision-making process that I used was quite similar. The six decision-making steps listed in the text are; identify and diagnose the problem, generate alternative solutions, evaluate alternative, make the choice, implement the decision, and evaluate the decision. My decision-making process was more condensed. I did step one; identify and diagnose the problem. Step two of my decision-making process was a combination of steps two and three.
