Training and core competencies require developing and facilitating a successful group. Counselors view group as a treatment choice. Leaders are required to be specialized in the area in which they desire to be treating. This plan will provide a description of a parenting group. The plan will include the rational for the group; it will also contain practical considerations for the group leader, ethical concerns and procedures for the facilitation of the group, and the instrument that will be used to evaluate the group experience.

1. Logistics

Description of the Group: Foster Care Parenting Group is being created for parents and foster parents of children between ages 0 to 18-year old. The group will serve as a support group for participants. It provides parenting trainings and education of its members.

Rational for the Group: The Foster Care Parenting Group will be in a psychotherapy and Adlerian format for foster parents who are voluntarily seeking parenting training and parents who are referred to the group by Court Order. The proposed group is to provide a means of support for parents to educate and train them. The group leaders will attempt to enhance group members parenting skills to improve their management and behavior of the children.

2. Membership

Group members will be recruited from the Department of Human Services, Division of Intervention Services, who are certified as foster parents and Court Ordered. The group leader will conduct screening by reviewing each referral pack to check for reasons of referral and to make sure each parent or foster parent has children between the ages of newborn and 18 year old. Parents and foster parents will be accepted as long as their children are still students. Group leaders will meet with each parent and foster parent for an initial individual meeting to review all legal matters regarding group membership.
