Sexual response in stages of child development is very common. In infancy, stimulation of the genitals from a diaper change can cause male or female infants to become sexually excited. Male infants can experience erection and orgasms as early as 5 months old and female infants can experience vaginal lubrication and orgasm as early as 4 months old. Pelvic thrusting is a sexual behavior used as a sign of affection from children 8 to 10 months of age. At around age 2, children start to become curious about their sexuality and may engage in genital play with their own genitals or the genitals of others. Masturbation is common in children and can start as early as 5 months. Masturbation continues into early childhood as children become more interested in their private body parts and the body parts of others. They may try to hug, kiss or climb on top of other children, touch their mother’s breasts or any women’s breast. As the child becomes a preadolescent, sexual urges and a curiosity to explore grow. Sexual behavior may consist of displaying genitals with or without touching and masturbation. As an adolescent, there are many changes to body because of puberty. Hormones are released into the body causing urges in sexual behavior. Adolescents may engage in sexual activity such as masturbation, oral sex, intercourse.
