The Benefits of Self-Direction

- Prepared by ASIWorks, Inc.

Self Direction Means …

You have control over your budget and that you choose which services and supports you use. You do the same three things you would do anyway: 1. Work with your case manager to identify your personal support needs and goals. 2. Work with your case manager to develop a plan including a budget to reach your personal support goals 3. Purchase the supports and services to meet those goals and outcomes.

Choice …

You decide who will provide your direct care. You control your budget by negotiating the hourly rates and charges within allowable limits. You choose who supports you. You choose your in-home staff; case manager, and Financial Support Service/Fiscal Intermediary – such as ASIWorks, Inc.

Control …

You hire someone you already know or find some one new to help you. You decide how much to pay the person within your budget. You approve the workers’ timesheet each pay period before they are paid. You decide when and how you want the people you hire to help you. You tell the people you hire to best help you meet your personal support needs. You decide if your workers are doing a good job.

Flexibility …

You tell your workers when to come to your home. You set the schedule and the specific personal support tasks they will perform. You request the assistance you need from your fiscal intermediary -- such as ASIWorks, Inc. -- to manage your budget and pay your workers and other bills.

Responsibilities …

You hire, fire, and supervise your workers. You make certain your workers have the required training, such as First Aid and CPR. You keep records in your home, such as daily logs of your workers’ services. You have a backup plan to make sure you have people there to help you when you need help. You stay within your approved budget.
