A case analysis for “ Does this milkshake taste Funny?”

(a) Major Issues:

In this case there are several issues related to the functioning of eastern dairy. Firstly for a company as large as Eastern Dairy there is lack of adherence towards manufacturing and quality standards. The company has minimal guidance for employees and they haven’t put in place a well-knit training program for the employees. Secondly, given the importance of the night shift and how critical it is to meet production needs no manager has been assigned and only 6 workers have been appointed to carry out the work. Thirdly, eastern Dairy has a poor inventory management and control system where the ingredients are improperly stored in the warehouse.

(b) Key Characters:

George stein: An average worker looking for odd jobs to make money and avoid the pursuit of a college degree. Working at Eastern Dairy seemed relatively easy for him and since it paid twice the amount he used to earn in his previous jobs he was quite excited. George’s position at Eastern Dairy required him to be stationed beside the conveyor and remove the containers and stack them as they came down the line. Work at the dairy was predictable and easy for him.

Paul: The “self appointed” shift leader. Rest of the crewmembers looked up to him for advice and was responsible for keeping the production records for the shift. When George reported about the leakage to Paul he didn’t seem too concerned. Paul was more worried about going home on time and the financial loss the company will incur if the production needs are not met.

(c) Analysis of the issue:

One night during routine work George notices milkshake vats leaking, on further inspection finds pipes were blocked due to maggots.
