Diabetes: Cause and Effect

The rise in obesity has been a growing trend as the years progress, with no end in sight. There are many problems and down sides to this trend. According to (Collens 2008 The Collens Diet) 8 out of 10 Americans are overweight. This is a concern to many, and as a result of this another concern has arisen, type 2 diabetes. There is a clear connection between the two. Since 1990 there has been a 76% rise in type 2 diabetes, and 80% of diabetes is related to obesity.(Collens 2008) There are 23.6 million people in the United States, or 8% of the population, who have diabetes. The total prevalence of diabetes increased 13.5% from 2005-2007. Only 24% of diabetes is undiagnosed, down from 30% in 2005 and from 50% 10 years ago. With so many people affected by diabetes, the American Diabetes Association has compiled diabetes statistics on the impact of the disease and its complications. It is apparent that eating unhealthy can lead to diabetes, the rate of diabetes cases has risen with obesity, the food pyramid has been changed, and people over a higher age are getting diabetes

Over the past years the amount of people who have gotten diabetes, and pre diabetes has risen, there are few signs of getting it, but it can be treated or prevented. There are many causes of diabetes. Diabetes can range anywhere from genetic to weight issues. The true name for pre-diabetes is impaired glucose tolerance.
