How Information Is Used

In every organization functioning in today’s business world, information must be accessible from a multitude of users and must have the ability to flow from multiple offices or databases worldwide. This allows for greater ease of business practices and flexibility among different departments in the organization. Information is used on a daily basis not only in the business world, but in personal life as well, from checking the morning news to accessing ones email through their smart phone. Information is all around us and is accessible nearly 24 hours a day, from nearly every electronic device that is available.

Information is used everywhere in an organization, in nearly every department that they manage. In todays business world information must have the ability to flow both vertically and horizontally. Vertically meaning to go from lower levels to the upper management for approval or advising, and horizontally from departments on the same level for cross-referencing and collaboration. The multiple departments take raw data and process it, the processed data is what becomes information to be shared among users in an organization. The information moves up and down the levels in an organization and is refined until a final product can be made and shared.

Information flows like previously mentioned both vertically and horizontally. This allows for an organization to share information across multiple offices and databases that all users can access, as well as set permissions on certain information that needs to only be shared with users that require access. For example, in a business that processes product transactions from purchases, the information from these purchases would travel from the point of sale to the shipping department or supply warehouse.
