Pride and Workplace Consequences

Pride can have a major affect in the workplace. Pride can be classified into two different categories: good pride and bad pride (Williams, 2013). However, as Williams (2013) stated in his book, there is a fine line between good and bad pride. I feel that what defines the difference is the attitude and motive behind the acts. Pride is one of the seven deadly sins that seem to be one of the hardest to define because of the fine line between the good type and the bad type. Everyone experiences pride in their lives such as a pride for their family, jobs, education, successes and accomplishments, etc. However, when pride overtakes a person’s purpose and it becomes about glorifying oneself and bringing attend to oneself which contributes to arrogance and conceitedness, it can have a neglect affect on the people involved.

Workplace pride can have a negative impact when it is misplaced. An example of pride and workplace consequence is a situation regarding a political personnel and employee. The Mayor had a prideful and arrogance demeanor and tried to use his authority to conduct actions that were against policies. However, when the town recorder addressed the issue and stated that she would not participate in the acts, she was fired from her position (Wilder, 2013). In addition, she has been the town recorder since 1983 and has never been reprimanded. As a result of the Mayor’s pride and arrogance, the city paid out $48,000 of a lawsuit settlement (Wilder, 2013).

The Bible states that pride can be a major downfall to an individual. The Bible states that everyone that has pride in their hearts is an abomination to God (Proverbs 16:5, King James Version). In fact, the punishment for pride was harsher than the one for adultery in the comparison of David’s sin with Bathsheba and David action in numbering the people.
