Unionized environments have over the years been an argument amongst many. Having a union within your organization today can be the key to running a successful and functional business. Over the last 6 years, working in my previous career as Dental Hygienist, I have experienced the negative aspects of working in the private sector. I have had the misfortune of losing my job on 3 different occasions, which on none of these occasions, did they have any validity behind their reasoning. In situations such as these, unions would help by protecting the employee from wrongful dismissal, and reasons such as “My niece just graduated and we feel she would be a better match” would not be acceptable. I am all for a unionized working environment. Despite my thoughts, there are many that tend to oppose to this.

There are negative aspects expressed by many people, yet, stats show that there are over 4 million Canadian workers which are part of a union and choose to proudly say so. (IAMAW, 2005). Fact is that 1 in every 3 professionals whom are working belong to a union (IAMAW, 2005). Unions offer job security and stability within an organization and has been proven to give confidence to employees in order to plan a career within that certain organization (Joseph, 2014).

Employers who choose to belong to unions understand the benefit as well as many workers. A union can benefit any workplace as it helps with many great aspects, we already mentioned job security but it also provides higher wages, benefits, and better working conditions for workers within a company (IAMAW, 2005). The positive in working in such an environment is clear to see.
