Introduction

Kudler fine foods is a specialty food store that was founded from the San Diego area of southern California. Kathy Kudler founded Kudler fine foods in 1998 with in La Jolla California (Apollo Group, Inc. 2010), she started the company as a neighborhood and opened two more stores at Del Mar, Encinitas, California. Kudler fine foods has the following departments: bakery, produce, meat and seafood, condiments and packaged foods, and cheese and dairy products.

Accounting Information System

Kudler fine foods purchased and installed a retail enterprise management system (REMS) used for the operation of the accounting operation of the company. The software system is used for most of the finance and accounting need of the company. They include; the general ledger, module, accounts payable module, accounts receivable module, POS module, and bank reconciliation module. The REMS system also supports a security system to help the company monitor financial transactions of how cash and checks are disbursed. Any amount over $1,000 must be approved by either the CFO or President and if over $5,000 both officers must approve the transaction (Apollo Group, Inc. 2010).

Business and Accounting Information Needs

Because of technology advancement in today’s business, companies need a software system to manage the daily operations business. Software is a program used to operate the computer system; we have application and system software, application software is used by the end users of a computer system. Examples of application software programs: are word processing, spreadsheet, database, and graphic programs known as productivity packages (O’Brien & Marakas, 2008, p. 118). Productivity packages are known as software suites because companies like Microsoft, IBM lotus, Corel, and Sun bundle together...
