Decision-Making Process Paper

Over the course of most of my adult life, I’ve been in the position of having to make professional and personal decisions. In one case, the decision I had to make was a combination of the two. About five years ago, I was faced with a professional dilemma due to the downturn in the economy that affected the industry I worked in. Personally, I was at the tail end of a long legal battle with my ex-husband which took a toll on my family’s finances. I needed to decide if I should make a career change along with relocating my family to a more affordable place to live because of our newly developed financial hardships.

How We Arrived Here

Financial hardships arise for a number of reasons. Fiscal irresponsibility as well as unforeseen circumstances can be the cause. We arrived in serious financial trouble for a number of reasons. First of all, both my husband and I were laid off from our jobs within a few months of each other. Second, we had been fighting an ongoing legal battle over my eldest child with my ex-husband which depleted our savings along with putting us in the debt of family members. At the time, my current husband and I were living in a house with our young children that we didn’t think we’d be able to keep. I had to take a hard look at our financial situation to see if there was any way for us recover, keep our good credit, and keep our family in our home.

Exploring Feasible Options

First I thought that selling our house would be the best way to solve the problem. I could also find a new, better paying job. The last option would be to file for bankruptcy. Our revolving debt was under control, but our house was bringing us down. If we could get out of our mortgage, we just may be able to survive without having to uproot our kids from the community they had grown up in.
