Abstract

Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder has many negative physical, social, and cognitive effects on children throughout their childhood and continuing into their adult life. Their physical appearance to others can be adversely effected due medications that the child receives to help control the symptoms of ADHD. Their behavioral problems can affect how well they work with others and socially interact with them while in school, in the workplace, or at home. ADHD effects learning abilities and attention spans while sitting at home or school. Many develop social impairments when trying to build relationships with close family or friends, or just with people in general.

Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder, also known as ADHD, is one of the most common neuro behavioral disorders. It is characterized by problems with inattentiveness, over-activity, impulsivity, or a combination of more than one of these (Straus, 2004). ADHD generally will be discovered at a young age in children, most of the time before they start school. ADHD can cause many problems with a child’s development as they grow, beginning at a young age and continuing into adulthood. Some of these problems can be limitations such as physical, social, and cognitive impairments that can extend throughout their school years and even further throughout their life. Many parents never want to believe their child has a disorder, but when they start developing slower than other children that are around them, parents then become concerned. If the parents do not treat their child’s ADHD properly, it can negatively impair many aspects of their child’s daily life, like school, work and relationships as they become an adult. Most will have some negative effects ranging from physical, social, and cognitive impairment.
