Facial Discrimination is one of discriminations. If there are two candidates who are ugly and good-looking when applying jobs, some employers trend to hire a beautiful employee. Thus, it is a job discriminations as the employment decision harms the ugly candidate and the decision is based on the person’s outfit rather than on individual merit.

According to Utilitarianism, it is moral doctrine that we should always act to produce the greatest possible balance of good over bad for everyone affected by our actions. In this case, the argument is that discrimination in employment is wrong because it has ill effects on total human welfare. Consequently, it leads to the bad result.

The law encourages employers to treat employees fairly and avoid discrimination based on looks. If an employer does not abide by the law, they are punished and subject to paying some heavy fees. The law encourages employers to give people a chance prior to jumping to conclusions such as “The public does not like to deal with ugly people.” Therefore, the disadvantage people, ie. ugly people, can be treated fairly and may get the job in a result, which fits the objective of utilitarianism. Social productivity is optimized to the extent that jobs are awarded on the basis of merit.

On the other hand, Libertarianism is the view that each person has the right to live his life in any way he chooses so long as he respects the equal rights of others. And based on Libertarianism, there is an extension theory called Nozick’s Entitlement Theory. As the view of employer, employees helps them to create wealth. Thus, human resource should be one of wealth. Under this theory, the government should not disturb them for hiring people, not even if its doing so would maximize social happiness as the employers have their right for choosing how to use their holdings and in what way to employ people.
