Bapu Bazaar - Udaipur

Introduction

Udaipur in Rajasthan can be said to be an oasis of culture and tradition. Every nook and corner of its streets resonates with the ascetic and ethnic values of this beautiful city. The locals are really social and friendly people. Indifferent to the cosmopolitan world around, people in Udaipur like to live in their own world, and what they sell speaks volumes for the same. This color and vibrancy is seen throughout their shopping markets too. By being a little aware and cautious with money, a person can truly experience the essence of Rajasthan by just walking through the streets and enjoying the aroma of this rich heritage.

Udaipur has numerous old bazaars which offer traditional artifacts and clothes from earthen to colorful designs and patterns, silver and imitation jewelry, hand stitched local wear, colorful beads, sequins and hand block printed patterns. Paintings, miniature, contemporary art, marble handicrafts, metal furniture, carpets and rugs make it a shopper’s paradise. Narrow streets and alleys of Udaipur provide a wide range of shops throughout the city for a variety of things.

If someone is looking for regular shopping, Bapu Bazaar is the destination. The shops here are clustered in small groups and they sell everything ranging from readymade textiles, crockery, homeware, food products and the innumerable bric-a-brac that characterize any Indian marketplace. In this report Bapu Bazaar will be referred to as a ‘Market’ for simplicity. For our project we have observed the market starting from Surajpole poilice station to market ending towards Deli gate. There are approx. 300 shops in the observed area with shops on both sides of the road.
