• What is discrimination according to the textbook? How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping?

According to Schaefer (2015) discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal right to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for other arbitrary reasons. (pg. 33) Discrimination is different from prejudice because it involves behavior that excludes members of a group from certain rights, opportunities, or privileges whereas prejudice is a complicated aspect of our behavior and has been extensively researched. (Schaefer, 2015. Pg. 33) It also means to not associating yourself with a particular race, age, or gender not like them, but to discriminate against others of a different age, race, or gender giving them the same opportunity as others. Discrimination is different from stereotyping because stereotyping is just a generalization about a group of people that can be either negative or positive. Also, discrimination is different from stereotyping because if you stereotype an black individual (for example) making comments about a group who are black and saying all black people are loud and obnoxious, than this may fit some characteristics for a whole group and not just the individual who may result in being a soft voiced person. Discrimination is the active harming due to prejudice and/or stereotyping. They all go hand-in-hand, but it is possible to have one without the others at the same time and can be intentionally or unintentionally.
