SDLC Value Paper

The System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) is a multi-step process that starts with the initiation, analysis, design and implementation of the system, then continues to the maintenance and disposal of the system. According to Satinzer, etal (2009), “For a system development project to be successful, the people developing the system must have a detailed plan to follow. Success depends heavily on having a plan that includes an organized, methodical sequence of tasks and activities that culminate with an information system that is reliable, robust and efficient (page 38).

Basic Elements of a SDLC

Regardless of the model that is chosen, documentation is crucial for any application. There are several steps to be followed to ensure that the information system is beneficial for the organization.

* Step one of the SDLC is to evaluate the existing system and identifying any deficiencies. A way to accomplish this is to interview system users and consult with any support staff.

* Step two of the SDLC process is to define all system requirements. Any deficiencies of the current system needs to be addressed and specific proposals for improvements defined.

* Step three of SDLC is designing the proposed system. Plans are laid out that concern the physical construction, hardware, operating systems, programming, communications and security issues (“Systems Development Life Cycle (sdlc)”, 2009).

* Step four of the SDLC the new system is developed by installing the new components and programs that were obtained. All users of the new system need to be trained and all performance testing needs to be done. It is during this step that any adjustments are made.
