Persuasive Essay: “Should Women be in Combat”

Over the years there have been debates and arguments over whether women are mentally and physically fit for military service. Efforts to discourage women from taking into consideration combat roles in the military have been an ongoing event. Many make the argument; can women master the skills and strategies of combat as well as men? Yes. Can women mentally tolerate the rigors of combat as well as men? Yes. Can women meet the physical rigors of combat at the level required by the U.S. forces and in particular the U.S. Marine Corps? Absolutely not. Is it fair to assume that women are incompetent of having the strength and steadiness to fight in combat? In history, women who were given the opportunity and encouragement effectively performed well in combat.

Since earth’s creation, women have been viewed as the weaker sex. Through the years, the importance of women in civilization and culture has grown, leading a way for women to become not the males controlled ownership but his equal. This is not true all the time, particularly when dealing with women in combat. Author James Collins of Women Unfit for Combat argues that when women are put in life threatening conditions, many of them would rise to the challenge, but he doesn’t t believe that women should be allowed to be on the front line in combat. Collins explains, anyone who wants to fight on the front line for his or her country should be able to, regardless of sex. Women have proven themselves to be fully proficient in doing most jobs a man can do. It’s not an issue of who is better. In terms of the burdens and demands of infantry warfare, women have proven themselves capable of fighting under even the most grueling of conditions says Collins.
