I. Background and Goals

From Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico, the Mississippi River flows through the American landscape and American life. It is a critical source of drinking water for 18 million people, a diverse habitat for wildlife, the backbone of our economy and a rich part of our heritage. Unfortunately, the once mighty Mississippi River is in trouble. Pollution from untreated sewage, agriculture and factories along with weak enforcement of water laws has caused our great River to decline.

Recognizing the need for river-wide cooperation to achieve large-scale, high-impact successes, more than thirty local and national non-profits founded the Mississippi River Network: Headwaters to Gulf, a collaborative effort to protect and restore the entire Mississippi River. The Network implements a public communications campaign, called 1 Mississippi, to raise awareness about the River, educate people about its current health and motivate people to take one of seven specific actions. The goal of this campaign is to build a constituency of people throughout the ten River states who are ready and willing to proactively protect the River.

The campaign has several objectives:

1. Recruit River Citizens, people who pledge to take actions to protect the River. We hope to recruit 5,000 River Citizens in 2011.

2. Engage people in River activities like clean-ups, festivals, and other outdoor activities.

3. Motivate people to take online actions to ask members of Congress to amend legislation to protect the River.

The 1 Mississippi campaign website (www.1mississippi.net) is the central hub of the campaign. The content on the website is updated by Biodiversity Project...
