3 issues that telecommuiting may raise to HRM

Although telecommuting has many benefits to both employees and employers, many employers are still reluctant to offer such opportunity to their workforce. Three disadvantages of telecommuting includes breeding resentment from the traditional employee that must report to an office building on a daily basis, the flexibility of telecommuters work schedule, and limited access to data, files, and collaboration with other coworkers.

First, the traditional employee builds resentment to friends or colleagues that telecommunicate. The non- telecommuting employee often asks what makes their friends or colleagues so special that they are able to work from home. They often wonder why they have to report to work at designated hours. They also must deal with rush hour traffic, unexpected auto accidents on their commute, and the added stress of what they are going to wear to work the next day.

Secondly, the telecommuter flexible work schedule may not facilitate their availability for meetings or problem solving. Employers often have trouble with communication because of their employees varied and flexible schedules. A big reason for telecommunicating is to plan work around a hectic schedule.

Lastly, telecommunicating limits access to data, files, and collaboration with other coworkers. Due to their distributed and geographic separation of employees, employers have a difficult time with access to certain resources. If internet connections are down many employees cannot access information or certain resources for their specific project.

Many employers also find it difficult to make telecommuters feel like they are part of a team. Since many people work from home, employers find it challenging to provide a “team approach” to projects.

Although there are several disadvantages in telecommunication, the disadvantages will never outweigh the advantages to both employees and employers. Telecommunication...
