* How does e-mail benefit an organization? Why might an organization want to limit how an employee uses e-mail during work hours? What is an e-mail’s path once it leaves an organization?

Email benefits than organization by allowing its associates to communicate efficiently with one another and with those outside of the company. E-mail servers provide a searchable database that an organization’s employees can access at any time. The statistics show that potentially 90% of all employees have sent or received personal e-mail while at work. Personal use of e-mail opens a company to liability issues and can jeopardize the company’s reputation. According to Laudon & Laudon, (2013), “some organizations operate their own internal electronic mail systems, [but] most e-mail today is sent through the Internet [mail servers]” (p. 208).

Instant messaging within an organization can be beneficial because it allows participants a way to chat with one another privately in real time without the formality and extra steps that e-mail requires. There are potential security liabilities and productivity questions prompting management within some organizations to monitor these chat sessions (Laudon & Laudon, 2011).
