Malaysian English

Malaysia is a multilingual country with a diverse population. The major ethnic groups include Malay, Chinese, Indian and other smaller ethnic groups in Sabah and Sarawak states. The largest ethnic group is Malay, attributing more than 50% of the population. The main spoken language is Malay, and which is also the National language of Malaysia. The second largest is Malaysian Chinese about 25%of the population. The main languages spoken by Chinese in Malaysia are Mandarin, Hokkien and Cantonese dialects. Following by Chinese, the smallest of three main ethnic groups, is the Malaysian Indians form about 10%of the population. Furthermore, the second language taught in school is English. However, Malaysian students are weak in English, a number of student are not able to communicate in English naturally after graduated from university or college. For instance, The Malaysia Employer Federation stated that 80% of Malaysian students who graduated from a university are unable to speak fluent English during job interviews

One of the main concerns that Malaysian students are weak in speaking English is because students are lack of motivation in speaking English. The students without the English speaking environment, probably the students tend to use mother tongue to communicate with each other among the community. For instance, if the environment of a student, which Mandarin is the main language being utilized, due to a lack opportunities to communicate in English, the students are not motivated in learning and communicate in English. Furthermore, the students who are satisfying with their English ability which is also one of the reason that the student less interest and motivation in learning English. As in if the students who not using English in daily life, the student may not realize that English is important and ought to study. Therefore, motivate students to learn and practice English language was an important issue.
