Digital Nation: An Eye Opener

The PBS documentary “Digital Nation,” analyzes the pros and cons of developing technology. It explores a number of different aspects of technology in education, the military, and gaming to highlight the idea that technology and the Internet are becoming ever-present throughout our society.

Growing up in a time where technology was always around it is hard to realize the negative effects that it has on our lives, but after watching this segment and relating it back to my own life my views were quickly changed.

The world we live in is completely consumed by tools from the digital age, whether it is cell phones, laptops, desktops, or tablets, we are always connected. New technological advancements have made it easy to multitask and take care of important responsibilities on the go. Bosses, clients, family members, and other email recipients are always looking for a quick reply, and if not given one right away, often misinterpret a reaction or response. Technology has changed the workplace and family life for ever.

Families live in a new world where everyone can be in the same room but all members are completely disconnected from one another. Parents are shut out of children’s lives through gaming, texting, and other social networks. People no longer know how to converse face to face as a result of instant messaging and texting. The constant need to stay connected is hurting many because they are no longer engaged, and are always distracted by other things. Being able to stay connected with others around the world is an extraordinary capability but we cannot let it surpass the traditional ways of communication.

I do recognize the positive impact that technology has had on all of our lives. Technology has helped schools become an even greater environment for students to learn and has created many hands on opportunities. Students can directly access assignments via websites or forums.
