1. The film Casa Blanca begins with narration explaining the background of the city. Casa Blanca was a city that refugees often went through when trying to escape to America, and they would attempt to attain exit visas from there. Over the radio it is heard that two German officers had been murdered on a train and that the killer is headed for Casa Blanca. The scene then transitions to Rick’s Café Americain. This is a bar with a “hidden casino,” where most of the buying and selling of the black market takes place. Ugarte walks in the door and asks if he will hold some letters of transit for him. Rick hides them in Sam’s piano without anyone noticing. Then, we learn Rick’s background in the anti-fascist wars, and soon after, Lazlo and Ilsa walk in. Lazlo was approached by Louis and asked to report to his office later, meanwhile Ilsa and Sam recognize each other and Ilsa had Sam play “As Time Goes By.” This song brought Rick over to the table saying “I thought I told you never to play—,” but stopped when he saw Ilsa. Then he sat down to have a drink with the group, breaking one of his own personal rules. Later, there is a scene where Rick is drinking along in his bar and there is a flash back. It shows Rick and Ilsa when they used to be in love in Paris. Ilsa was supposed to leave for Marsielle with Rick, but she never showed up to the train station. She only left a note saying that they couldn’t see each other again. This is the last that Rick had seen her until that previous night. Then, Ilsa walks in and tries to explain what happened in Paris but Rick was too drunk and angry and so she left. The next day Rick and Ilsa see each other outside and Ilsa told him that she had been married to Lazlo even when they were in Paris. Also, Ferrari tells Lazlo to ask Rick about the letters of transit. Later a woman asked rick if Louis’ word was good and if he would provide the exit visa if she had sex with him.
