Planned Change

1. Describe “planned change” as compared with other types of change

2. Explain the problems associated with planned change and how to overcome them

3. Describe the framework of the general model of planned change, including activities and sequence of events.

In today’s highly competitive environment organizations have to keep paste with current issues that can be related to technology, globalization, quality and diversity.

“ More and more managers must deal with new government regulations, new products, growth, increased competition, technological developments, and a changing workforce. In response, most companies or divisions of major corporations find that they must undertake moderate organizational changes at least once a year and major changes every four or five.” (Kotter, J & Schlesinger, L.)

There are different types of changes that can occur in the organization:

1. Leadership Change

Leadership transitions are critical moments for the company. Transitions in leadership offer an opportunity to make changes in many areas of the organization.  In Lewin’s study he describes this change, as “The transition is an occasion to rethink the commitment to the present agenda, to reflect on roads not taken in the past, and to review future choices. Many significant changes – in policy, people, organizational structure, procedures – are more easily introduced simultaneously with a leadership change.” 

2. Structural Change

 Changes within an organization’s structure can occur due to external influences.  Structural changes may involve structural characteristics, administrative procedures, or management systems. They may involve simple policy changes or be as complex as a complete restructuring of the management hierarchy.
