Abstract

Dr. Kevin Leman is an American Psychologist whom resides in Tucson, AZ. A huge advocate on family and child development, Leman has written several books on the subject. What a Difference a Daddy Makes is a great book teaching fathers how to become better parents and better involved in their daughters’ lives. From birth to marriage, fathers are the key to a girl’s happiness and self esteem or lack thereof. Fathers must stay close with their daughters to ensure a long, happy life and one that consists of successes instead of failures. Even after adulthood daughters depend on their fathers for guidance on issues such as relationships and parenting.

What a Difference a Daddy Makes: The Indelible Imprint a Dad Leaves on His Daughter’s Life is a book written by Dr. Kevin Leman to describe the development of females and what impact dads have on their lives. All parents should understand the importance of each parent to their child(ren); however, parents may not be aware of what level an impact each parent has. Dr. Leman began the book by noting Shirley Hunt and how much of an impact her dad had on her life. Most parents probably do not realize what kind of impact they have on their children. Leman (2000) states “A woman’s relationship with her father, more than any other relationship is going to affect her relationship with all other males in her life…” The relationship between a father and his daughter is very important; once it’s gone it is extremely difficult to overcome. Dr. Leman also pointed out that a healthy father-daughter relationship is a huge factor in a woman's happy life and marriage. “…involved fathers boost academic achievement, promote psychological health, increase a child’s empathy and bolsters the status of women” (Leman 2000).
