Reflective essay on negotiation

As everyone knows, individuals hold various personal values and judgements in an organization. Thus, in order to fulfil the effective and harmonious internal working circumstance, organizations need to establish positive negotiation between managers and workforce. The contribution of this essay is the reflection of negotiation between manager and subordinate in a role-play activity which was commenced in class.

In this activity, the role I played is a manager who was required to negotiate with two subordinates. My mission is to convince them to follow the safety rules during their work. The first subordinate Pat is an experienced employee for more than 20 years and also an informal leader of a group. The other one Chris is single mother who has worked for 6 years and was recently transferred from other department with negative comments by colleagues. Meanwhile, some influence tactics such as pressure, exchange, rationality, coalition building, emotional appeal, impression management, legitimized appeal and avoidance were given for us to communicate with the subordinates.

During the negotiation, I tried to use different influence tactics to convince Pat and Chris. Pressure is the first tactic I have used to start the negotiation. I emphasized the importance and necessity of wearing safety glasses in working conditions. Moreover, I told them it is also a compulsory safety rules in our company. Anyone who dose not obey this rule will be fined and even be fired from right now. However, Pat and Chris show totally different response to me. Chris seemed like to be convinced when I talking about the punishment. On the contrary, Pat still showed inattentive attitude to the safety rules and gave his resistant suggestion to argue with me.
