The day to day lifestyle of the society is completely dependent on transport either travelling to work places, visiting or shopping etc. This has drastically increased the on road traffic by 10 fold in the last 3 years. With increase in vehicles on road the tendency for mishaps also increases. Vehicular communication will be handy in preventing the accidents and traffic congestions,if any thereby reducing the effort of the each individual vehicle trying to address the situation. Be it from Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) toV2V (Vehicle to Vehicle) Communication the main motive of the vehicular communication has been to ensure safety, assist the driver, and manage the traffic and sometimes for payment at tolls. Efforts are being made by nations to introduce innovations in this mode of communication and India too joined this team recently by initiating an electronic toll payment system replacing the manual one. This article surveys the aspects of vehicular communication in detail and its origin, role in the current scenario, innovations and the promising future form.

Introduction

Vehicular communication as its name suggests is the communication between the vehicles on the roads and the road side units where they exchange information like traffic status or safety warnings. From a survey done by World Health Organization (WHO) more than 1.2 million people die due to road accidents in a year. The anxiety of reaching the destination sometimes overcomes the consciousness of safety. It is here the vehicular communication plays an important role. Going by the definition of vehicular communication, it can be simply explained as the interaction between the vehicle in motion and road side units which can be referred to as nodes.
