Traffic jam, oh traffic jam

In every teenagers mind their 16th birthday brings one thought: driving. Although it may not be a parent’s favorite passage of this day, it sure is the favorite of a teenager. When teenagers turn sixteen and start driving, the first thing they can’t wait to do is drive to school, thinking they can get a little bit of extra sleep time and a nice warm drive in those cold winter mornings. This dream is not necessarily a reality for most teens at Manual High School. Most of us wake up at the same time our bus used to come or even earlier which, in lack of better words, sucks. Our problem is the traffic around Manual High School in the morning, directly from dropping of students, which cause safety issues as well. Even a Manual teacher has stated, “I have been doing morning parking lot duty for a long time. I have never seen the parking lot as busy in the mornings and afternoons, as it is this year”. Although in the morning we have our security, Ed Burton and Russell Rigdon helping outside, traffic and safety is still a major problem. Just by hiring someone to direct traffic, restricting time periods for drop off, and designating the entrances for different things, we could see much improvement in the morning traffic.

According to our security guard, Mr.Burton, Manual cannot be granted a traffic guard because of the lack of students that walk to school. Even if we offered to pay a traffic guard, it would not be approved by JCPS. Because of this situation, the next thing we could do is get a parent volunteer to direct traffic, or even offer him or her small payment each week. We could pay for this increase with a raise in student parking passes. This year, a student parking pass cost $25, and with a $5 increase it wouldn’t do much harm to the students. With that extra $5, we could pay someone $1000 ($5 x 200 parking spaces), which would be just under $30 a week. $30 per week to stand...
