Communicating Across Cultures

Cross-cultural communication often involves several barriers that prevent success. The aim of this report is to recognize and overcome dilemmas that may occur within cross-cultural communication. Moreover, this paper defines communication, the different types of communication and how communication is used. The meaning of communication is examined before getting to understand the different cultures worldwide. When understanding these issues, how different communication styles are misused and affect cultures and businesses across the world are understood.

Communication

Cross-cultural communication often involves several obstacles preventing success; the goal of cross-cultural communication is to identify the different issues that may occur in an attempt to explain how to overcome them. Cross-cultural communication covers both the subject’s communication and the differences in culture. Imagine a supervisor of a large multinational organization and one is working with people all over the world. For the job, one has to travel often and meet people from different cultures. How does one communicate with people from a different culture, and how does one prevent uncomfortable situations during business meetings? The answer is cross-cultural communication. This form of communication covers both the subject’s communication and the differences in culture.

Process

The communication process involves one exchanging information or expressing thoughts and feelings. Within organizations, people communicate with each other, most often by oral communication. This takes place between managers, co-workers and subordinates alike. In companies, communication skill is used to send messages 64 percent of the time, according to Adeela Rehaman (2011), which is why it is important to understand all the concepts of communication.
