Human resource management plays an important role in the health care industry. Human resources are considered the people that work in the organization (Gómez-Mejía, Balkin, & Cardy, 2010). Managers are responsible for the other members of the organization. “Managers are the people who are in charge of others and who are responsible for the timely and correct execution of actions that promote their units’ successful performance,” (Gómez-Mejía et al, 2010, pg 3). Human resource management (HRM) has many roles in the organization. HRM is responsible for hiring, training, performance, compensation, communication, and administration. “The management of human resources is of crucial importance in enabling the delivery of efficient and effective services,” (McHugh, Johnston, & McClelland, 2007).
The roles of the human resource department may vary, but they have a lot of responsibility in a health care organization. One role of the human resource department is hiring. The HR department is responsible for hiring the most qualified person for the job available. The hiring process does not stop once the person has the job. The HR department must then make sure that the person that is hired is trained and fully aware of the responsibilities he or she has. HRM is then responsible for establishing and maintaining performance standards. HRM must define the standards for employees to follow and ensure that each person is meeting those standards (Mayhew, 2011).
HRM also develops guidelines for salaries, compensation for non-salaried employees, benefits, and bonuses (Mayhew, 2011). HRM provides this information to each employee and is also responsible for ensuring that the employees understand the compensation and benefit requirements. HRM is responsible for any changes in payroll and benefits, including insurance and bonuses. HRM also helps sets department budgets and performance standards for each area of the organization (Mayhew, 2011).
