Getting a good job in life usually involves you getting a degree of some type from an accredited college and getting into a college usually requires a decent GPA as well as passing test scores on the SAT’s. However, the way that you perform on the SAT can play a huge factor into which college you get into as well as can separate you from other students. The higher your score, the greater the chance you have of getting into a college compared to someone with that of a lower score. Getting into a college is a lot of parents’ dream for their kids; unfortunately this is not that easy to do for some; especially if you have the cards stacked against you. What I mean by this is that statistically, African American students tend to score way lower on their SAT’s then that of Caucasian students. This is generally attributed to both their socioeconomic background as well as their ethnic background. My project is called “Test Above” and its main focus is on improving the SAT scores of African American high school students. For this project there will be required SAT prep classes that students are required to take. All students are required to take these classes but it mainly targeted towards African American students.

I chose this project because I can relate to it in a way. I grew up in a middle class family and went to school in North Scottsdale; this alone already improved my chances on scoring better on my SAT. I grew up playing on basketball and football teams with two close friends of mine (Seth and Donell) who were African American and grew up in Peoria, as well as Tempe, Arizona. Our schools were completely different; I had predominantly Caucasian students with a very limited number of minority students. At Peoria High School and McClintock High School, there was even mix amongst minorities compared to Caucasian students.
