the Egyptian Business world.

The Egyptian business world is very different from what we deal with on a day to day basis. The culture in Egypt is different from that in the United States. There are multiple key differences that need to be addressed prior to conducting business. I will cover these key differences and make recommendations based on the research I have completed.

Business Etiquette and Protocol in Egypt

Relationships & Communication

. Egyptians prefer to do business with those they know and respect, therefore expect to spend time cultivating a personal relationship before business is conducted.

• This is very important to the Egyptian business world. There needs to be communication before business is even introduced.

. Who you know is more important than what you know, so it is important to network and cultivate a number of contracts.

• The more people you know and contracts you have the more likely you are to do business with this company.

. Egyptians believe direct eye contact is a sign of honesty and sincerity, so be prepared for disconcertingly intense stares.

• You will always want to make direct eye contact with whom you are speaking. You will come off as dishonest and rude if you fail to do this.

. Egyptians are emotive and use hand gestures when they are excited. In general, they speak softly, although they may also shout or pound the table. This is not indicative of anger; it is merely an attempt to demonstrate a point.

• Don’t be afraid to show a little emotion when speaking with the Egyptian people.

. You should demonstrate deference to the most senior person in the group, who will also be their spokesperson. This is a country where hierarchy and rank are very important.

• Always show the proper respect when meeting with upper management.
