As written in the Supplemental Topics Notes there are several means of communications and
list four of them. All of these take place in out daily lives and especially our workplace.
There are other means of communications that come to mind as well.
1. Upward communication, which are questions, inquiries, complaints that employees direct
toward their superiors.
2. Downward communication, the guidance and leadership management gives
employees.
3. Non-verbal communications such as eye contact, facial expression and other forms of
non-verbal communication are signs that your boss or another employee is pleased or
displeased with your work.
4. Visual communication, the interactive form of communication which relies on the
observation skills of employees. Techniques such as presentations, displaying of charts,
figures and graphics on notice boards.
Knowing when and what type of communication to use is important in getting your message
across. For example, when an employee has performed in an outstanding, above-the-call manner
