To prepare for the on-site consultation from OSHA, there are several things that should be done. First, to do some research into the compliance and regulation standards that OSHA has for the Printing Industry. There are several online e-tools on OSHA’s website that can walk you through the process to see what needs to be looked at before the consultation visit. Another tool you could use is the printing industry checklist, that they use when being visited prior to OSHA’S arrival.

One thing that should be done prior to the consult is, to let all employees and Managers know what is going on, make sure they are all properly trained, have the ability to recognize where the hazards are in the print shop, have workplace safety training program finished, the employees that run the print machines need to know how to safely operate the machines. We would also need to make sure that all ergonomics are in place prior to arrival and that they meet the printing industry standard for OSHA. All employees should be included and participate in the consult.

All material in regards to workplace safety and hazards should be opted for all employees and outsiders to read and understand. All record keeping, reporting and postings should be available for OSHA prior to the consult.

The consultation visit is different from the inspection visit because it is a voluntary meeting that is scheduled by the business, to have the consult come in and tell them what meets OSHA standards, ad what needs to be changed. The other differing factor is that you are in agreement that you will correct any necessary job safety and health hazards in a timely manner in obligation to the consult. Another differing factor is that you could qualify for a one-year exemption from routine inspections by OSHA. In addition, unlike n inspection, the consult cannot result in any penalties, or citations can be issued.
