Human Resource Management Roles

In today’s society, human resource management is evolving to become a more integral part of our health management teams. According to Gomez-Mejia, Balkin, & Cardy 2014, “effective human resource management (HRM) is a major component of any manager’s job.” The department exists because it is there to support all other employees in the organization. My paper will discuss few of the many roles that human resource management is responsible for.

Human resource must be innovative and maintain a competitive advantage when it comes to recruiting and selection. Human resource management should develop strategies that offer a sustained competitive advantage to hiring employees (Gomez-Mejia, Balkin, & Cardy, 2014). An example would be that a human resource manager may use their knowledge about nursing shortage to develop a specific strategy to retain employees or to maintain the current staff (Mayhew, 2014). In any factor, human resource managers are responsible for recruiting and selection and should find the best way possible to attract future employees and maintain those already employed. Offering incentives for nursing staff, bonuses, and other compensation for work is a good way to attract any new employee or current employee.

Another important role for human resource managers involves employee relations. Ultimately, the responsibility for preserving the employer-employee relationship through designing an effective employee relations strategy is the human resource manager (Mayhew, 2014). Safety in the workplace is also involved in this category. All employees want to feel safe where they work. If they do not feel safe, why would they stay employed there? Human resource managers can improve safety by making sure that everyone is up-to-date on all harassment and discrimination laws.
