Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the major elements and dimensions of culture in Japan. This paper will discuss how these elements affect business relations between Japan and foreign business professionals. Japan offers a thriving technology based economy that is assessable from anywhere in the world. The scholarly research cited in this paper has been obtained from Liberty University’s Jerry Falwell library online. The master level research cited will provide an understanding of conducting international business with Japan.

What are the major elements and dimensions of culture in this region?

Communication

It is essential for persons conducting international business to understand there are cultural differences in communication styles. “Global business professionals encounter various cultures throughout the world. Individuals and organizations within each culture communicate in manners unique to their culture” (Satterlee, 2009). If international business professionals do not take the time to understand the culture of the nation they will be working in, they may have an encounter with local business professionals that is less than desirable. It is important to know that many cultures receive American communication in a negative way. Business professionals must be aware of what local individuals deem as offensive or embarrassing. They must also be aware that certain words are do not always have the same meaning in different cultures. Some cultures strongly believe in a ranking system. The senior management members are to be addressed with no recognition of lower level management members. Other cultures may not see this as important. All cultures have differences in communication. It is up to business professionals to be familiar with the culture of the nation in which they will be conducting business....
