Healthy Lifestyles Minimize Cancer in Humans

Introduction

“Worldwide over 1 million people die due to lung cancer each year. It is estimated that cigarette smoking explains almost 90% of lung cancer risk in men and 70 to 80% in women.” (Walser, et al., 2008) This translates to millions of people suffering from a self-inflicted disease that is otherwise preventable by refraining from tobacco use. Non-smokers are even likely to become victims of lung cancer caused by second-hand smoke. Tobacco use affects everyone either directly or indirectly so, maintaining a healthy lifestyle will minimize the occurrence of cancer in humans. .

“Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable illness and death in the United States. It causes many different cancers as well as chronic lung diseases, such as emphysema and bronchitis, and heart disease.” (U.S. National Institutes of Health, n.d.) So, if it is proven that cancer kills millions each year and cancer is caused by smoking tobacco, it’s safe to say that smoking tobacco kills. People continue to smoke even though they know it’s bad for them and others. Many smokers have the idea they are not harming anyone else but, according to U.S. National Institute of Health, approximately 3,000 lung cancer deaths occur each year among adult nonsmokers in the United States as a result of exposure to secondhand smoke. The U.S. Surgeon General estimates that living with a smoker increases a nonsmoker’s chances of developing lung cancer by 20 to 30 percent. Many lose their life to lug cancer without ever touching a cigarette.

If you ask around, every smoker has their own reason for smoking. Some may say it relieves their stress, others may say it helps them think, and a few may not know why and say, “it’s just a habit“. If this is the case, exercise can be used to replace the nasty habit of tobacco use.
