Research Project on “Group Communication” for Com 110 Online Class

OBJECTIVES:

✓ To explore the different types of groups & teams as explained in the Workplace Communication and Small Group Communication chapters.

✓ To investigate the roles, responsibilities, rules and goals in a group.

✓ To analyze leadership and power in group communication.

THE PROCEDURE:

1. Find a formal small group, 3 – 12 people, in any of the following categories; workplace, community, or professional organization. Yes, it should be a group you are currently involved in as an active member.

Formal means it must be an organized and professional group working toward a common goal. A group of friends or family does NOT qualify for this project.

EXAMPLES TO GET YOU THINKING…..

Workplace examples ~ budget committee, department chairs, human resource department, team leaders, supervisor team, department, battalion, volunteer committee, etc…

Community examples ~ American Red Cross, Central YMCA, Big Brothers Big Sisters, AA, The Sierra Club, Junior Jaycees, etc…

Professional examples ~ many of the above would be considered “professional” as well. Other examples may include a professional affiliation you have within your current job such as a member of Toastmasters, The NC State Teachers Association, etc… Even your professional memberships as a student such as Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society or club on campus.

2. Within that formal small group you must develop a contact person, most helpful would be the team leader, supervisor, or coordinator of that group. You will need to let this person know you will be making some observations and notes for a...
