Summary

This article mainly deals with alternatives that companies have to choose from in order to initiate change processes that can help companies to survive in their field and to be resistant against threats from the environment. Therefore, it is most important that a company is constantly in change and can adapt to altering conditions. Such forms of change cannot be realised from one day to the other, but the process can take several years to be fully implemented, depending on whether small or large changes are necessary. These changes must be split into smaller goals, in order to manage them as best as possible individually and to gain different perspectives.

Traditional models for change processes are defined through starting and ending points which are determined together in a sequence, are very closely linked and consist of so-called interim steps or smaller bites. The author mentions interim steps or smaller bites that should follow the model: “Plan-Do-Stabilize-Repeat”.

Commentary

“There is an old riddle that goes 'How do you eat an elephant?' The normal response to this riddle is 'do not eat it' but the proper answer is to look at the task of eating an elephant the same as you would eat an apple.” The author mentions an approach of how to implement change, especially from the organization’s point of view with focus on human resource management. It is much easier for an organization to change if alterations are split into small pieces instead of large change processes. Additionally, slight changes can more easily be accepted by the various executives and furthermore, are less complex, measurable and manageable.
