My Health Care Coverage

As an Active Duty Military Member, I am provided medical insurance through TRICARE. TRICARE offers different medical coverage plans for active duty members, National Guard, Reservists, and retirees. Family members also qualify for TRICARE coverage. The coverage I have is TRICARE Prime. With TRICARE Prime, medical services are provided at military treatment facilities or through a network of civilian providers established by the regional contractor. Tricare is managed by separate regions, which are TRICARE North, TRICARE South, TRICARE West, TRICARE Europe, TRICARE Latin America and Canada, and TRICARE Pacific. I am assigned a primary care provider who provides most of my medical care.

According to the TRICARE website, “active duty service members and their families pay no enrollment fees and no out-of-pocket costs for any type of care as long as care is received from the PCM or with a referral to a civilian provider in the TRICARE network”.

Procedures such as abortions, cosmetic surgery, electrolysis, and vasectomy reversals are not covered under TRICARE. There are limitations to the TRICARE Prime Plan. The TRICARE Handbook states that “all services and supplies (including inpatient institutional costs) related to a non-covered condition or treatment, or provided by an unauthorized provider, are excluded.” During the military entrance process, a thorough screening of conditions incompatible with military service is conducted on all service members. Depending on the condition, if a condition is found, but does not prohibit the individual from entering the service, he/she will receive care for under TRICARE established guidelines.
