Case Study Analysis: Oak Brook Medical Systems, Inc.

The situation described in the case study of Oak Brook Medical Systems, Inc. is one of communication failures. Jacqueline Harris is a long-term employee with approximately 12 years of service. Her reputation is that of a “no-nonsense, results-oriented manager with a history of being able to get things done” (O’Rourke, 2010). Jacqueline’s role the past 18 months has been director of strategic planning for the Hospital Supply Division. During this tenure, her division has experienced a staggering annual growth rate close to 35 percent.

Jacqueline’s collegiate record is exceptional. She has qualified professional success at all levels, heralded at one time for “developing the strategy that resulted in a $40 million business for the company” (O’Rourke, 2010). Unfortunately, many colleagues and subordinates have developed negative attitudes towards Jacqueline’s management style. She is perceived as “unapproachable and tough to work with…….being defensive and, at times, overwhelming” (O’Rourke, 2010). Jacqueline is aware there are communication struggles but reduces them to the necessity of accomplishing the job. She is anxious because no one has approached her about a promotion. Jacqueline is feeling like a target of racism because she is an African American.

The senior management of Oak Brook Medical Systems has not addressed concerns with Jacqueline about the obvious difficulties existing between her and others in the company. Although the topic is recognized, “no one has brought this to her attention directly” (O’Rourke, 2010).
